If you are going to throw that kind of money into a common vacuum --- why not look at the true high performance vacuums like Miele, ElO or Sebo.

They're exceptional for people with allergies as far as getting rid of dander and they have HEPA filters in them. Many people say they've had theirs as long as 20 yrs.

The Sebo X Series (uprights) state they're really great at picking up pet hair (besides the dust).

This site has info and check out their bottom line recommendations (also interesting articles):

They also ship free on anything costing over $150.

I had Hoovers - they're horrible (below average) as far as I'm concerned - and always broke-dust blows everywhere.

Now I have a Panasonic (which is good for run of the mill), it has a bypass motor so if something metal is sucked up by accident, it won't ruin the motor. Mine has never broken and I'ved had it 7 yrs.

Higher performance vacuums are worth looking into if you are serious about getting rid of the hair, dander and dust.

When I buy again I will look into buying a Miele, ElO, or Sebo, since they have better pickup for dust particles and dander.

I think it's like comparing a Ford Taurus to a BMW Z-8 if you know what I mean. Performance counts.

I'm not sure any vacuum is worth $600. My office at work has a Hoover that cost less than $300 and it does an excellent job of sucking up stuff from the carpet. After all that's what all vacuums do. True, some are better than others but Consumer Reports gives the Hoover machines a better score than the Dyson and they're a lot less expensive.
References :
I have the DC14 Animal.
Not cheap, but a friend with alot of animals recommended it. We have 5 cats, 3 dogs and 3 children and I will only buy a Dyson again.
It really does work well.
