To be honest, we fix ours ourselves. It's not really that complicated a mechanism, it's fairly straightforward. If you have anew one then it's probably worth getting a quote for repairs, but if (like ours) its quite old and you are tempted to throw it away anyway, why not give it a go?

If you go to the Dyson homepage and click on Accessories, you can download the original manual, if that's any help too.

http://www.dyson.co.uk/range/access.asp?sinavtype=menu

If all else fails, our local tip usually has hundreds of dysons that only have minor faults (broken hose etc) and you might be able to get one cheaply to use for parts.

Or..buy a new one!
References :
I believe if you contact the dyson number on the lable of your machine they will come out and do it at an amazingly reasonable cost. Try that number and get a quote. 08705275104

Personally I think Dysons have poor build quality - especially since they started making them outside the UK However TOH likes the Dyson - I think there are far better options available.

ETA A service and replair of major bits works out at £55 and they now have a Freephone number 08002795127 This cost covers replacement of all major bits except tools but includes motor and hose and gives you a 12 moth gaurentee as well. Not a bad deal - but I do sympathise with those Brit workers who were sacked.
References :
Dyson products are being boycotted by over a million people in the UK. They sacked all their British workers and moved production to the Far East just to make fatter profits for a few shareholders.

Bin it and buy British!
