Dyson DC24 vacuuming stairs
Sorry about bad quality (hard to use cam and vac at same time). Just showing how I use my Dyson DC24 when on the stairs as I have heard some people moan about the hose being short! I have no problem with the small hose on the stairs as the DC24 sits perfectly on my stairs. If not then it is easy to hold in the hand and vacuum, it is so light. Extension hose is available should one want to make the hose longer or just opt for a DC25 instead which has full stair cleaning length.

Dyson DC04 Vacuum Cleaner
Dyson DC04, this was purchased in 2002 so at time of writing this is 7 years old. Has been used heavily but looks as good as new. This machine has had new handle, new hose, new clutch (when first purchased in 2002 as original was very noisy in operation) A new duct as the main body had cracked where the handle goes into. Apart from that no other problems.
This is the model which has the Dual Cyclone technology newer models of course have the Root Cyclone, they are supposed to be more powerful but I think this machine is just as good even though it doesn’t have the trigger to empty the dust away so makes a bit of mess when emptying. 1200Watt motor with the same post filter from 2002, this has never been touched, only the pre motor filter which gets washed whenever I feel like it (it doesnt really get dirty in 6 months) the only think the filter gets a couple of pieces of long hair which must bypass the cyclones.
This machine has 230 air watts and is very difficult to use on Lino with brush off as the suction is too strong the machine just doesn’t move unless really forced to, on carpets its good on performance, often taking LOTS more of the Zorb out of the carpet that the DC03 misses.
** UPDATE ** OCTOBER 28TH 2009
This machine motor has burnt out with smoke coming out of it and a horrible screething noise. May have to get a new motor or see about buying a new machine, cant do as yet as got a trip to USA so cant afford new machine, have to use DC05 which I dont like as I dont like cylinders

Dyson DC24 vacuum cleaner. Before I bought this machine I thought that the ball was simply a marketing gimmick! Since I have had this machine I realise how much better and easier it is to have this on the machine particularly if you vacuum random areas quickly.
I can see that Dyson are genuinely getting better and this machine so much better than previous Dysons and it is very durable and you know it can be bashed about without worry unlike the previous Dysons I have had which were fragile. Good to see Dyson are now making their machines more tougher and long lasting.

Bagless: The original design by Dyson to do away with the bag in a vacuum cleaner was supposed to solve the problem of a your unit with a bag losing power as the bag fills up with dirt, and it turned the industry on its head when it launched. The jury is still out though as to whether there is any significant benefit to the technology, and if there is one then if it outweighs the drawbacks. For instance if you have allergies then the fact you have to empty all the dust and dirt out into a bag or bin when it is full is a lot messier than just throwing away a full bag like with a normal model.
Upright: This is the traditional design for a vacuum cleaner, whether bagged or bagless. The upright structure allows you to easily push and pull the unit to clean large areas of floor, and you can get easy access to all the attachments that come with it and to the bag/container when it needs emptying.
Canister vacuum: This design is made for getting into hard to reach places in houses without a lot of open floor space. The actual mechanics of the unit are all contained in a little canister on the floor and then a long hose comes out of it which you can put attachments on to do the cleaning. This means in a room with lots of furniture then it outperforms the upright because you can use the long hose to get under and around things, but it is much harder to clean large areas of open carpet with it.
Carpet cleaner: The final option is to go even deeper and go for a machine that can shampoo your carpets as well to really get the dirt out of them. You need to get one of these in addition to a normal vacuum, because I don’t know of any machines that can do both shampooing and normal cleaning, but they can be a great buy if you do get one. Over time a lot of dirt and grime gets worked into the carpet which makes it unhygienic and makes it lose its colour and look older that it really is, a carpet cleaner can bring it back to its former glory for you, and they are relatively cheap too.

Don’t try to save a few pennies by using obviously dirty filters or bags more than three quarters full. As clogged filtering medium is the reason the suction power of your vacuum seems to die. Typically you want to replace vacuum bags when they hit about 75% full. And the filters on bagless models like every 90 days – assuming typical usage.
Here’s the most common mistake most make – they’re in too big of a hurry. That’s right, one quick pass and they call it good. Actually it’s better to run over high traffic areas like five or six times. Giving the beater bar a chance to do it’s job and thoroughly extract the dirt.
Be sure the height setting on your vac is right. Too low and you risk damage to the vacuum itself. Too high and you’re not applying the head to the fibers to extract the dirt.
The idea is to work against the pile, if you would, to loosen the embedded dirt particles in the pile. Using the power and weight of the vacuum head to accomplish this after repeated passes over the same section.
Keep your vacuum maintained: Clean the brushes, check the belts, inspect the vacuum head regularly. Removing anything that has wrapped itself around the beater brush.
Avoid running over the cord with the vacuum. Find a central location, plug it in and keep it behind you as much as you can.
Despite the mounted light, do this job when you can see where you’re vacuuming.
Nothing beats the look of a freshly vacuumed carpet. If you have a bagless vac you can even see how much dirt, dust, hair and debris you’ve extracted from the rug. And it’s a good feeling knowing your home is clean and fresh.
