What they don't do is test the same vacuum for 5 years. The fact is that 5 years down the road, the Dyson vacuum will be running better and save you a bunch of money on bags, belts and filters. The Dyson vacuums require virtually no maintanence. They don't loose suction, regardless of how full they are. They are also easy to fix without having to take the vacuum in to the shop. I'd recommend that you at least consider the DC17 Absolute Animal (easiest vacuum on the market to operate, $549) or the DC15 Animal Ball (easiest vacuum on the market to steer, $599). Go to Sears and try them out and see what you think. They are more up front, but save you a lot of time and money long term. If the Dysons are out of your price range, look at the 20-35922 ($279 on sale). This is the vacuum that consumer reports rated #1. It's beltess and uses cloth bags which handle pet hair extremely well. Also plan on buying extra bags, ($7.99 for two) and filters ($14.99 for the HEPA, $9.99 for the chamber filter). Whatever you do, don't go with any other bagless vacuum than the Dysons. (It came with a few attachments included a little motorized one for the stairs and a flat one for under furniture.) I have a long haired dog that sheds like crazy and a couple of kids. Between the kids and the dog, I'm always vacuuming. The Dyson does a great job. It's easy to pull out of the closet and go. The one drawback for me is the attachment that you have to put on to get under the sofa and coffee table --- that can be cumbersome. (I've gotten used to it though) The only other vacuum system that compared (IMO) was the Rainbow cleaning system (water based), but that wasn't as easy to use and you had to dispose of a water and dirt filled basin. In 35 years of owning vacuums it is the best... I have pets and it gets up all of the pet hairs. It cleans easy and I have never needed to repair it.
